Delroy aka 3D Man, aka Triathlon is one of those Superheroes with a bit of a complex story, he isn’t your classic superhero, with beams and lasers, or flight, infact Triathlon in my opinion is more like a real life superhero than anything, his abilities are well within the reach of your average fella down the road. Triathlon’s physical abilities are all enhanced to roughly three times peak human potential, notably his strength, speed, agility and sensory acuity. So technically all this is possible with both you and I if we train hard, focus, and eat well… lol.

Growing up as a child, I was always very much into cartoons, and comics; watching all the usuals, He-Man, Thundercats, X-Men, you name it, I probably remember it.
I watched them religiously and never questioned why, or even noticed the lack of black Superheroes until later in life. I liked that blissful ignorance, I never questioned, I never doubted and I never felt limited to only identifying with the black superheroes. In the playground I could have easily been He-Man, Thor, Superman, Batman anyone!!!!
I remember playing ‘Superheroes’ in the playground rushing out to meet with my friends in the pre-play huddle where it was common for us to argue about who was going to be which superhero that day. This was usually a very consistent process, the loudest more dominant of my friends went for the more well known powerful Heroes and more or less delegated the rest out, with a reason as to why you couldn’t possibly be He-Man, or Spiderman. Most of my friends went along without an argument, but not me!!! I too wanted great powers, super strength, ripped muscles, flight, I didn’t want to be Toad, or Iceman, I wanted to be one of the BIG BOYS. I remember arguing for my chance to be Superman one day, only to get the same line you can’t be Superman, you should be XYZ, because…………. But NO I insisted, I wanted to be Superman!!! My friend stared at me annoyed by my defiance and blurted, ‘you can’t be superman…..your the wrong colour’.
Those words left a bitter taste in my mouth, I felt deflated, I thought and thought o.k i’ll be, my mind quickly raced as I tried to think of an adequate retort……. A Black Superhero, that would blow Supermans socks off. A Black Superhero who was just as powerful, A Black Superhero who I could now identify with, A Superhero, that looked like ME!!!
I just couldn’t think of one, I thought of being Storm, but me playing a woman in the playground, it was playground suicide, so I settled for one of the lesser superheroes that playtime. Determined to look into this whole black superhero thing later, there had to be loads more…. More Bishops, Storms, Blades.
Eventually time went on, and that playground experience became a distant memory, a joke I could tell around tables at dinner parties, a trivial playground moment, a forgotten bit of research. 20+ years later and here I am, finally ready to embark on that mission, to seek out as many Black Superheroes as I can, and bring them to light. I think there is a superhero in all of us, and I can still very easily identify with Superman, just as I did when I was a Naive Little Child. However I want more, I want to explore these black characters, their stories, bring them to the forefront, I need to appease the little boy inside, who needed to know that there were heroes made just for him.
So throughout the coming weeks I will be featuring different Black Superheroes, both from the DC and Marvel Universes, including, Storm, Black Lightning, Bishop, Pantha, Goliath, 3-D Man, Justice, The Mongoose, Rage, Spawn, Monet St Croix, oh believe me the list is unbelievably long, So keep checking back, where we will first look at Marvels Monica Rambeau (Photon).
